Premenstrual syndrome
Ailment overview
Description
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of symptoms (including irritability, anxiety, mood swings, bloating, tenderness, headaches, and cramps) that occur several days or hours before the onset of the menstrual cycle and fade immediately after the onset of menstruation. PMS is generally thought to be caused by fluctuations in hormone levels during this period or by the breakdown of progesterone in the body. It is considered that the consumption of caffeinated drinks and chocolate also provokes symptoms of PMS.
