Tooth abscess
Ailment overview
Description
Tooth abscess arises as a result of bacteria entering through a broken tooth. Pus accumulates at the root of an infected tooth. The main symptom of dental abscess is intense, persistent, throbbing toothache. The infected tooth can be sensitive to heat, cold, and pressure caused by chewing. Later symptoms may include swelling in the face, swelling of the lymph nodes in the neck or jaw, and fever. In the final stage, a rupture may occur in the abscess, in which an unpleasantly smelly liquid is excreted in the mouth. If the abscess is not treated, it can spread to other areas of the head and neck.
